French Guiana is an overseas department and region of France on the northeastern coast of South America. It is bordered by two nations: Brazil to the east and south and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 area has a very low population density, with less than three inhabitants per square kilometer.

French Guiana heavily depends on mainland France for subsidies, trade, and goods. The primary industries are fishing (which has replaced pearl diving), gold mining, and timber. The Guiana Space Centre, operated by the French space agency CNES, is particularly significant in the local economy.

The official language is French, and the official currency is the Euro. The region has a tropical climate and wet and dry seasons. The capital city is Cayenne. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including many endemic species. It's also home to many Creoles, Maroons, and Amerindians.
