Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh and India to the northwest, China to the northeast, Laos to the east, Thailand to the southeast, and the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal to the south and southwest, respectively. Its diverse geography includes highlands, plains, and coastal areas. The country's largest city and former capital is Yangon (Rangoon), while Naypyidaw was designated the capital in 2005.

    **History**
Myanmar has a rich history that dates back thousands of years, with powerful kingdoms such as the Pyu and the Mon. The Bagan Empire, founded in the 9th century, is particularly notable for its architectural achievements and the spread of Theravada Buddhism. The country later saw the rise and fall of several dynasties and kingdoms. In the 19th century, Myanmar came under British colonial rule after three Anglo-Burmese Wars. It gained independence in 1948 as the Union of Burma, and its name was officially changed to the Union of Myanmar in 1989 by the military government. However, this change has been contested and not universally recognized.

    **Politics and Recent Events**
Myanmar has experienced long periods of military rule, ethnic conflict, and civil unrest. The military junta formally dissolved in 2011, leading to political reforms toward liberalization, although the military retained significant influence. The National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won a landslide victory in the 2015 general elections, marking a significant move towards civilian rule. However, the military (Tatmadaw) staged a coup on February 1, 2021, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other NLD leaders, leading to widespread international condemnation and internal protests and violence.

    **Economy**
Myanmar's diverse economy includes agriculture, textiles, precious stone mining, and energy resources like natural gas and petroleum. Agriculture remains a significant part of the economy, with rice as the primary crop. The country is also known for its rich deposits of jade and gems. Long-standing international sanctions have hindered economic development, although these have been eased in recent years, only to be potentially reinstated following the 2021 coup.

    **Society and Culture**
Myanmar is ethnically diverse, with the Bamar (Burmese) people forming the largest ethnic group, followed by significant Shan, Karen, Rakhine, Chinese, Indian, and Mon populations. There are over 100 ethnic groups, leading to a rich cultural tapestry but also contributing to ongoing ethnic tensions and conflicts, notably with the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine State. Myanmar's culture is heavily influenced by Buddhism, which plays a central role in daily life and is reflected in the country's thousands of Buddhist temples, monasteries, and festivals.

    **Human Rights and Conflict**
The situation of the Rohingya Muslims has drawn international attention, with accusations of ethnic cleansing and severe human rights abuses leading to a humanitarian crisis and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people to neighboring Bangladesh and other countries. The 2021 military coup has further exacerbated the country's political and humanitarian crises, leading to sanctions and international condemnation.

    **Geography**
Myanmar's diverse landscapes include the mountainous regions bordering the Himalayas in the north, the central plains along the Irrawaddy River, and the coastal regions in the west and south. The country's climate varies from tropical monsoons in the lowlands to temperate ones in the highlands.
