Uruguay, officially known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is a country in the southeastern region of South America. It is the second-smallest nation in South America after Suriname. Argentina borders it west and southwest, Brazil to the north and northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast. The country also has a scenic coastline along the Rio de la Plata.

The capital and largest city is Montevideo, which is situated on the country's southern coast. Montevideo hosts nearly half of Uruguay's population, mainly of European descent, primarily Spanish and Italian.

Uruguay is known for its stable democracy and highly developed social systems. It ranks high in Latin America on various measures, including democracy, peace, low perception of corruption, and quality of living. Additionally, Uruguay was the first country in the world to legalize the production, sale, and use of cannabis for recreational purposes.

The country has a history of progressive policies; it was among the first in the region to establish a welfare state, legalize divorce, and grant women the right to vote. Uruguay has also been lauded for its environmental policies, mainly using wind and other renewable energy sources.

The Uruguayan economy is characterized by an export-oriented agricultural sector, a well-educated workforce, and high social spending. Beef is one of the main exports, and the country has one of the world's highest numbers of cattle per capita. Other significant sectors include services, industry, and tourism, with visitors drawn to its historic cities, beach resorts, and rural estancias (ranches).

Uruguay's culture reflects its European roots, with the tango and the candombe (a dance and musical style with African origins) being significant cultural contributions. Football (soccer) is a passion in Uruguay, and the country has a storied history in the sport, having won the FIFA World Cup twice, first in 1930 and again in 1950.

Uruguay is a founding member of Mercosur, the Southern Common Market, including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Venezuela (currently suspended). The country often meditates in regional disputes and takes pride in its diplomatic tradition and international engagement.

Despite being a small nation, Uruguay has earned respect on the international stage for its high standards of living, commitment to democracy, social justice, and promotion of human rights. It continues to be an active participant in regional and international affairs.
