Vanuatu is a Pacific island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is some 1,750 kilometers (1,090 miles) east of northern Australia, 540 kilometers (340 miles) northeast of New Caledonia, east of New Guinea, southeast of the Solomon Islands, and west of Fiji.

Melanesian people first inhabited Vanuatu. The first Europeans to visit the islands were a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Fernandes de Queirós in 1606. In the 19th century, the islands saw a mix of influences from European settlers, missionaries, and traders. The area was known as the New Hebrides and was a Franco-British condominium—a unique form of shared governance—until independence was achieved in 1980 when the Republic of Vanuatu was formed.

The capital city is Port Vila, located on the main island of Efate. The country comprises roughly 80 islands, about 65 of which are inhabited. The population is mainly of Ni-Vanuatu ethnicity, and over a hundred indigenous languages are spoken, making it one of the most linguistically diverse countries on earth. Bislama, an English-based Creole language, is the national language and acts as a lingua franca, along with English and French.

Vanuatu's economy is primarily based on small-scale agriculture, which provides a living for most of the population. Fishing, offshore financial services, and tourism, with emphasis on diving and ecotourism, are other mainstays of the economy. The country is known for its strong cultural heritage, including music, dance, and sand drawing, which UNESCO recognizes as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The government system is a parliamentary democracy, and the President, who serves as the head of state, is elected by an electoral college. The Prime Minister, the head of government, is elected by the members of the parliament.

Vanuatu is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Nations, and the Pacific Islands Forum. Despite its small size, it has been active in international environmental issues, particularly advocating for global action on climate change, as the nation is among the countries most vulnerable to its effects, including sea-level rise and the increased frequency and intensity of tropical storms.

Vanuatu is known for its rich biodiversity and intact ecosystems, which include coral reefs, rainforests, and a variety of endemic species. It is also home to several active volcanoes, including Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes.

Like many Pacific nations, Vanuatu faces challenges such as geographic isolation, vulnerability to natural disasters, limited resources, and the need for improved infrastructure and educational systems. Despite these challenges, it maintains a reputation for being one of the happiest places in the world, with a strong sense of community and a slower pace of life that many find appealing.
