East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, is a small country in the Indonesian archipelago in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean. It is the world's most densely populated sovereign state, with an area of only about 15,000 square kilometers (5,800 square miles) and a population of approximately 1.3 million people.

East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in 2002 after a prolonged struggle for self-determination. The country has a complex history, having been colonized by Portugal in the 16th century and occupied by Indonesia from 1975 to 2002.

The capital city of East Timor is Dili, which is also the largest city in the country. Dili is located on the northern coast of Timor Island and is home to the National Parliament, government offices, and many international organizations.

East Timor is a predominantly Catholic country, and its culture is influenced by its Portuguese colonial past and indigenous traditions. Tetum is the official language, but Portuguese is also widely spoken, particularly among the older population.

East Timor's economy is primarily agricultural, with significant crops such as coffee, corn, and cassava. The country also has rich natural resources, including oil and gas, but these have not yet been fully exploited. Tourism is a growing sector, attracting visitors to the country's beautiful beaches, diving sites, and cultural heritage.

Despite its natural resources and potential for economic development, East Timor faces significant challenges, including poverty, lack of infrastructure, and political instability. The country has made progress in recent years but still requires substantial international assistance to build its institutions and infrastructure.

East Timor is a member of the United Nations, the Asian Development Bank, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), among other international organizations. It is also a signatory to various human rights treaties and conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
