As others have said, it's highly advisable to purchase travel insurance, as I have done. It's important to note that insurance is not exactly a product you buy to get regular medical care. Insurance is a product you hope never to have to use.

As Amy Scott has said, purchasing your prescriptions privately in some countries may even be cheaper. For example, I was in Thailand this year and had two medical visits. One was to a dental surgeon, where I had three fillings, a deep clean, and a checkup. The whole place was super clean and very modern. I paid privately, and it cost about £50. In the UK, I would have paid about £300 privately. I also went to the hospital for two injections and some malaria pills. As I was paying privately, I was seen to, and it all cost me about £60. In the UK, I got a quote for this amounting to about £450.
