What worked for me on my quest to become a fully self-sufficient digital nomad was hard work. There are no shortcuts to "becoming a digital nomad" since you need to consider many factors. Initially, you want to gather as many clients within your specialty as possible. Have a professional-looking website highlighting your services, ideally featuring client testimonials and reviews.
Never assume that a client will stay your client forever. It's critically important to have several clients as a digital nomad because you need multiple income sources. You can even combine skills, such as doing language translation for one client while copywriting for another. Look at yourself as the "business" and count all your daily living expenses.
One unique thing about digital nomads is their ability to exploit currency exchange to achieve a higher quality of life. In other words, if your income is in US dollars and you notice that the dollar has shot up in value in Costa Rica, you can move there and take advantage of the currency exchange. That is, always be aware that you are location independent, and use that to get the best deal on where to live temporarily.
Being a digital nomad is fantastic and has many perks; it can be gratifying if you're willing to put in the work.
