Moldova, officially known as the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital and largest city is Chișinău. Moldova has a rich history, with cultural influences from the Romans, Ottomans, and Russians.

**History**: The territory of modern-day Moldova has been inhabited since ancient times, but the region became prominent in the Middle Ages as part of the Principality of Moldavia. In the late 18th century, parts of Moldavia were annexed by the Russian Empire, becoming known as Bessarabia. Following World War I, Bessarabia united with Romania, but it was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 and became the Moldavian SSR. Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991, following the latter's dissolution.

**Geography and Climate**: Moldova is characterized by its hilly landscape with a fertile plain, the Bălți Steppe, and the Dniester River flowing through the country. The climate is moderately continental, with warm summers and cold winters.

**Economy**: Moldova's economy is considered one of the poorest in Europe, highly dependent on agriculture, which features wine production as a significant sector. The country also relies on remittances from Moldovans working abroad. More recently, Moldova has been working to attract foreign investment and improve its economy by strengthening ties with the European Union.

**Political Structure**: Moldova is a parliamentary republic. The President of Moldova serves as the head of state, while the Prime Minister is the head of government, overseeing the executive branch. The Parliament (Parliament) is a unicameral legislative body responsible for making laws. Moldova has pursued closer integration with European institutions, signing an Association Agreement with the European Union in 2014, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area.

**Demographics and Culture**: Moldova has a diverse population that includes ethnic Moldovans, Ukrainians, Russians, Gagauz, and Bulgarians, among others. The primary language is Romanian, written in the Latin script and officially referred to as "Moldovan" within the country. The Orthodox Christian faith is the predominant religion. Moldovan culture is influenced by Romanian, Russian, and Ottoman traditions, among others, and is renowned for its wines and rich musical and dance traditions.

**Transnistria**: A significant issue for Moldova since its independence has been the status of Transnistria, a breakaway region along its eastern border with Ukraine. After a brief war in 1992, it has functioned as a de facto independent state with its government and military, though the international community does not recognize it. Negotiations to resolve the status of Transnistria continue, but progress has been slow.

In recent years, Moldova has been working toward strengthening its democracy, developing its economy, and resolving ongoing issues, such as the Transnistria conflict, with a long-term goal of European integration.
