Monaco, officially known as the Principality of Monaco, is a sovereign city-state, country, and microstate on the French Riviera in Western Europe. France borders it on three sides and the Mediterranean Sea on the fourth. Despite its small size, Monaco is renowned for its upscale casinos, yacht-lined harbor, and prestigious Grand Prix motor race, which runs through Monaco's streets annually. Its area of 2.02 square kilometers (0.78 square miles) makes it the second smallest country in the world, after the Vatican City. However, it boasts a highly dense population.

    **History**
Monaco's history dates back to the 6th century BC, though the Genoese family of the Grimaldis established a long-standing rule over the area in 1297, with brief interruptions. The Grimaldi family still rules Monaco today, making it one of the oldest ruling families in Europe.

    **Economy**
Monaco does not levy personal income tax on its residents, a policy attracting many wealthy "tax refugee" residents from European countries, who derive most of their income from activity outside Monaco. Tourism also drives the economy, with many attracted to its casino and pleasant climate. Additionally, Monaco is a major banking center. It closely guards the privacy of its clients, though it has taken steps to avoid its image as a tax haven by cooperating with international tax authorities.

    **Government and Politics**
Monaco is a constitutional monarchy/Principality with Prince Albert II as head of state. The executive branch consists of a Minister of State (a high-ranking official appointed by the Prince) who presides over a five-member Council of Government (Cabinet). Legislative power is shared by the Prince and the National Council, which is democratically elected. The judiciary is independent.

    **Society and Culture**
Despite its small size, Monaco has a vibrant culture and society. It is known for high-profile events like the Monaco Grand Prix, the Monaco Yacht Show, and the Monte-Carlo Masters tennis tournament. The official language is French, and most people adhere to Roman Catholicism.

    **Education and Healthcare**
Education in Monaco is compulsory until the age of 16 and is provided free of charge. It generally follows the French system and maintains a high standard. Healthcare is also of high quality, with excellent facilities available for all residents.

    **Challenges**
Due to its limited land, Monaco faces significant challenges related to space. It has been addressing these by reclaiming land from the sea and by building upwards. Housing in Monaco is costly, reflecting the demand for property in such a limited area.

    **International Relations**
Although Monaco is a sovereign city-state, France is responsible for its defense. However, Monaco maintains two small military units. The principality is a member of the United Nations and participates in various international organizations but is not a member of the European Union. It maintains diplomatic relations with over 100 countries and has embassies in several European capitals.

Monaco's unique blend of high-end luxury, tax policies, Mediterranean charm, and long-standing sovereign status make it a distinctive place on the world map.
