Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is located in southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean; it also shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south and east. Windhoek serves as both the country's capital and largest city.

    **History**
Before its independence, the area known as Namibia was colonized by Germany in 1884 and named German South West Africa. During World War I, the territory was occupied by South African forces and afterward was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate and, later, a United Nations trusteeship. After years of resistance and a protracted war of independence led by the South West African People's Organization (SWAPO), Namibia gained independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990. Since independence, SWAPO has been the dominant political force in Namibia.

    **Geography and Climate**
Namibia is known for its contrasting landscapes. The Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world, runs along its Atlantic coast, while the Kalahari Desert is in the east. The country also features savannahs, bushland, and the Central Plateau, where most of its population lives. Namibia is home to the Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world, and the Etosha Pan, a large endorheic salt pan that forms part of the Kalahari Basin. It has a generally arid and semi-arid climate, mild winters, and sweltering summers.

    **Economy**
Namibia's economy heavily depends on extracting and processing minerals for export. It is a leading producer of gems, specifically diamonds, uranium, gold, silver, and base metals. Agriculture, herding, tourism, and manufacturing also contribute to its economy. The government has actively pursued conservation and sustainable wildlife management practices, making Namibia a popular destination for eco-tourists.

    **Society and Culture**
Namibia is ethnically diverse, with a population comprising different ethnic groups, including the Ovambo, Kavango, Herero, Himba, Damara, Nama, Caprivian, San (Bushmen), and white Namibians (mainly of German and Afrikaner heritage). English is the official language, although Afrikaans and German are widely spoken, along with several indigenous languages. The country has a rich cultural heritage influenced by African and European traditions.

    **Politics and Governance**
Namibia is a democratic but de facto one-party state. The President of Namibia serves as both the head of state and the head of government. The country has a bicameral legislature consisting of the National Assembly and the National Council. Namibia is known for its stable political environment and has made significant progress in governance and human rights since independence.

    **Environmental Conservation**
Namibia was the first African country to incorporate the protection of the environment into its constitution. The government has established several community-based conservation projects empowering local communities to manage natural resources sustainably. This approach has led to the successful protection and recovery of several endangered species and increased the country's wildlife population.

Namibia remains a country of stark beauty and diverse cultures, facing challenges such as economic inequality, unemployment, and the impacts of climate change. However, its commitment to conservation and sustainable development offers a hopeful path forward.
