Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey, is a transcontinental country straddling Eastern Europe and Western Asia, with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. The country shares borders with eight countries: Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest, Georgia to the northeast, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran to the east, and Iraq and Syria to the south. Seas surround it on three sides: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.

Ankara is Turkey's capital, while Istanbul, the nation's largest city, is its financial, cultural, and historical center. The Bosphorus, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, divides Istanbul into European and Asian portions, making it the only city spanning two continents.

Turkey has a rich historical heritage, with notable sites such as the city of Troy, the ruins of Ephesus, and the iconic Hagia Sophia, which has served as a Greek Orthodox Christian basilica, then an imperial mosque, and now a museum. Cappadocia is famous for its unique rock formations and cave dwellings, and Pamukkale is known for its white travertine terraces.

The modern Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Atatürk introduced sweeping reforms to secularize and westernize Turkey, including adopting a new legal system, the Latin alphabet, and a shift from the Islamic caliphate to a secular republic.

Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, and constitutional republic with a diverse cultural heritage. The current government operates under a presidential system enacted following a constitutional referendum in 2017.

Turkey's economy is classified as emerging and developed, with a mix of modern industry and commerce and a traditional agriculture sector that still accounts for a significant portion of employment. It is among the world's leading producers of agricultural products, textiles, motor vehicles, transportation equipment, construction materials, consumer electronics, and home appliances.

The country is a member of various international organizations, including NATO, the G20, and the Council of Europe, and has been a candidate for membership in the European Union since 1999. Turkey is also a member of the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, and the WTO.

Turkey's strategic location has given it geopolitical significance and has been a point of transit for migrants and refugees, mainly from conflict zones in the Middle East. It has experienced political tensions and security concerns internally and with neighboring countries and has been involved in military operations across its borders in recent years.

Turkish is the official language, and most of the population is Muslim, with a secular government and constitution. The country is known for its cuisine, which reflects a fusion of Central Asian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Balkan cuisines. Turkey is also famous for its carpets, baths (hammams), bazaars, and unique blend of Eastern and Western traditions.
