The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas and north of the island of Hispaniola. The territory consists of two groups of tropical islands in the Lucayan Archipelago: the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands.

The total land area of the Turks and Caicos Islands is about 616 square kilometers (238 square miles), and the population numbers around 38,000 people. The capital is Cockburn Town, located on Grand Turk Island, and the territory's administrative and political center is also there. Providenciales, known locally as "Provo," is the most populous island and the hub of the tourism industry.

The islands have a dry, sunny tropical climate with consistent yearly temperatures. They are renowned for their stunning beaches, extensive coral reef systems, clear waters, and abundant marine life, making them a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation, water sports, and diving.

The Turks and Caicos Islands economy is primarily driven by tourism, real estate development, and the offshore financial services sector. The US dollar is the official currency, facilitating much American tourism.

Historically, the islands were inhabited by the Taino and Lucayan peoples until they were virtually wiped out after the arrival of Europeans. The Turks and Caicos Islands were not officially settled until the late 17th century. They have been under various colonial rulers but have been associated with Britain since the 18th century, either directly or as part of the Bahamas or Jamaica.

The political structure of the Turks and Caicos Islands is that of an overseas territory, with a Governor appointed by the British monarch representing the Queen and overseeing the executive. The territory has its own elected government that oversees domestic affairs, while the UK is responsible for foreign affairs and defense. The legal system is based on English common law, supplemented by local ordinances.

Historically, the islands have experienced governance and financial management challenges, leading to a period of direct British rule from 2009 to 2012. Since then, local governance has been restored.

The culture of the Turks and Caicos Islands reflects a blend of African and European influences. The majority of residents are descendants of enslaved Africans who were brought to work on salt pans and cotton plantations. English is the official language, and the population is predominantly Christian.

The territory is known for its annual Music and Cultural Festival and is the birthplace of ripsaw music, played using a handsaw as the primary instrument. The Turks and Caicos Islands are also famous for their conch dishes, a local cuisine staple.
