KeymasterUkraine is a country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia to the east and northeast; Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania and Moldova to the southwest; and the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, respectively. It is the second-largest country in Europe after Russia, covering approximately 603,550 square kilometers (233,030 square miles).

Ukraine's capital and largest city is Kyiv (also spelled Kiev). Ukrainian is the official language, and most of the population is Eastern Orthodox Christian, with various jurisdictions represented, including the newly established Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Ukraine has a rich cultural history with solid influences from Western Europe and Russia. The country was vital to the medieval East Slavic state of Kyivan Rus' and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union. Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, following the dissolution of the USSR.
Since independence, Ukraine has faced challenges transitioning to a fully functional democracy and market economy. It has undergone significant political, economic, and social transformations, including the Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Euromaidan protests in 2013-2014, which resulted in the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovych.
In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea following a controversial referendum, a move widely condemned by the international community as illegal. In the same year, conflict erupted in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists, leading to a protracted war that has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of people.
Ukraine's economy includes a large agricultural sector known for its fertile soil called "chernozem." It is a major global producer of grain and sunflower oil and has a diversified industrial base, including machinery, energy, mining, and chemicals. However, the economy faces issues such as corruption, reliance on energy imports, and the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region.
Despite these challenges, Ukraine has pursued closer ties with Western institutions. It has signed the Association Agreement with the European Union, including a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), and aspires to future EU membership. Ukraine is also a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), among other international organizations.
In recent years, the conflict with Russian-backed separatists and the annexation of Crimea have dominated Ukraine's politics and relations with Western countries and Russia. The Minsk agreements, brokered by the OSCE and other international actors, were designed to stop the fighting in Eastern Ukraine, but their implementation has been problematic, and sporadic violence continues.
As far as I know, the cutoff date is March 2023; Ukraine's situation may have evolved, especially considering the dynamic nature of ongoing events and international relations. Please consult recent sources for the latest updates on Ukraine.
