Vietnam, officially known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is a Southeast Asian country located on the eastern edge of the Indochinese Peninsula. China borders it to the North, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and the South China Sea, referred to as the East Sea in Vietnam, to the east and South.

The country's capital is Hanoi, and its largest city and economic hub is Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon). Vietnam has a population of more than 96 million, making it the 15th most populous country in the world. The official language is Vietnamese, and the predominant religion is Buddhism, with many people practicing folk traditions, Christianity, and other faiths.

Vietnam's history includes ancient civilizations, dynastic rule, colonization, and war. It was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, gained independence in the 10th century, and later established its own dynastic rules. In the mid-19th century, Vietnam became a French colony as part of French Indochina. It later fought for independence under the leadership of the Communist Party, led by Ho Chi Minh, resulting in the First Indochina War against France.

After the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was temporarily divided at the 17th parallel, with a Communist government in the North and an anti-Communist government in the South. This division led to the Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975 and involved significant U.S. military intervention in support of South Vietnam. The war ended with the fall of Saigon to North Vietnamese forces, the reunification of the country under Communist rule, and significant social and economic upheaval.

Since reunification, Vietnam has undergone substantial economic reforms (Đổi Mới) starting in the late 1980s, moving from a highly centralized planned economy to a "socialist-oriented market economy." These reforms have led to rapid economic growth, improved living standards, and greater integration into the global economy. Vietnam is now one of the world's largest exporters of rice and coffee, and it has a developing manufacturing sector, particularly in electronics and textiles.

Despite economic liberalization, the Vietnamese government retains strict control over political expression, and the Communist Party of Vietnam remains the only legal political party. The country has been criticized for its human rights record, including restrictions on freedom of speech, the press, and the internet, as well as its treatment of political dissidents.

Vietnam is known for its diverse landscapes, which include lush mountains, bustling cities, and long coastlines with beautiful beaches. The country has a rich cultural heritage with influences from Southeast Asian, Chinese, and French cultures. Vietnamese cuisine is renowned for its use of fresh ingredients, complex flavors, and street food culture.

In terms of foreign relations, Vietnam is a member of international organizations such as the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). It has also developed strategic partnerships with multiple countries and continues to navigate a path of economic growth while balancing its relationships with major world powers.
