Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east and northeast. The country's name comes from the famed Great Zimbabwe ruins, a medieval city in the southeastern hills that was once the center of a vast empire known as the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country's Late Iron Age.

The capital and largest city of Zimbabwe is Harare. The country has 16 official languages, with English, Shona, and Sindebele being the most commonly used. Zimbabwe is known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and impressive landscapes, including the Eastern Highlands mountain range, the savannahs of the Hwange National Park, and Victoria Falls, one of the world's largest and most famous waterfalls.

Zimbabwe's modern history has been marred by political turmoil and economic challenges. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1980 after a protracted liberation war. Robert Mugabe, the nation's first Prime Minister and later its President, served from independence until 2017 when he was ousted from power through a military coup. Mugabe's tenure was characterized by authoritarianism, economic mismanagement, and human rights abuses, which led to international isolation and sanctions.

Historically, the country's economy, based on agriculture, mining, and manufacturing, has struggled due to various factors, including land reform policies that disrupted commercial farming, hyperinflation, and political instability. In the early 2000s, Zimbabwe experienced a severe economic crisis, which led to widespread poverty and the emigration of many Zimbabweans in search of better living conditions.

Zimbabwe has rich mineral resources, including gold, diamonds, platinum, coal, and chromite. It was once known as the "breadbasket" of Southern Africa due to its productive farming, but agricultural output has decreased significantly since the land reform program began in 2000.

Despite these challenges, Zimbabwe is known for its high literacy rates and well-educated population. The country's education system was once one of the best in Africa, though its economic decline has impacted it.

Zimbabwe has a diverse wildlife population and is home to several major national parks, such as Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park, which are important tourist attractions and conservation areas. Tourism, notably around Victoria Falls and wildlife safaris, remains a significant sector of the country's economy.

The political scene in Zimbabwe has been contentious, with allegations of election rigging, voter intimidation, and political violence. After Mugabe's ousting, his former vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, became President. Mnangagwa has pledged to revive the economy, attract foreign investment, and mend international relations. Still, progress has been slow, and many systemic issues plaguing Zimbabwe remain unresolved.

Zimbabwe is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and other international organizations. The country continues to work towards political and economic reform to achieve stability and development.
