What Is E Residency

Who can apply for e-Residency?

Anyone from any country can apply for e-Residency, provided they meet the eligibility criteria set by the Estonian government. The main requirements for applying are:

  1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Applicants must have a valid government-issued ID from their country of origin, such as a passport or national ID card.
  3. Applicants must have a legitimate reason for obtaining e-Residency, such as running a location-independent business or using Estonia's digital services.
  4. Applicants must pass a background check conducted by the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. This check ensures that the applicant has no criminal record or other issues that could pose a security risk.
  5. Applicants must pay the application fee, which is currently €120 (as of 2023).

The application process is conducted online and involves filling out an application form, uploading the required documents (such as a copy of the applicant's passport), and paying the application fee. The Estonian government reviews the application and conducts the background check. If approved, the applicant will be invited to collect their e-Residency kit from an Estonian embassy or consulate of their choice.

It's important to note that while e-residency is open to people from all countries, the Estonian government reserves the right to refuse applications based on background check results or other security concerns.
